The Impact of Computer-Mediated Communication Media Characteristics on information Acquisition, Attitude Favorability, and Intentions toward Joining the Navy

Abstract: 
Attracting qualified military service applicants has become more difficult in the last decade. The Navy has increased advertising expenditures, but recruiting shortfalls persist. Research suggests that using more appropriate media in recruiting communication may improve overall recruitment effectiveness. The project team’s current ONR-funded research is examining this relationship in recruitment information dissemination, specifically addressing media “richness” (i.e., information-carrying capacity) and improvements in receiver certainty and Navy enlistment intentions. Traditional media are currently being examined; however, additional research is required—and herein proposed—to investigate computer-mediated communication media (e.g., e-mail, websites) that may be more effective for some recruiting information dissemination tasks than traditional media.
